Your Global Nursing Journey Starts Today: Lessons from Dr. Oluwadamilare Akingbade
In today’s interconnected world, nursing is no longer confined to your local hospital or city. Dr. Oluwadamilare Akingbade reminded us during his session at the Nursiscope Career Summit 2025 that a global nursing career begins the moment you decide to prepare for opportunities you haven’t even seen yet. It’s about taking intentional steps now, even before the opportunities arrive.

Dr. Akingbade shared his personal journey, and it’s a testament to vision, persistence, and preparation. When he first entered his PhD, he had zero publications. Yet, years of consistent effort and strategic collaboration transformed his profile, before leaving Hong Kong, he had over 40 publications, paving the way for a post-doctoral fellowship in Canada valued at $140,000 CAD.

The key lessons he shared:
1. Start Preparing Early: Even small, consistent steps contribute to your future. Volunteering, leadership roles, and research experience today will set the stage for tomorrow’s opportunities.
2. Build a Compelling Academic and Professional Profile: Your CV should reflect more than grades, it should tell your story. Dr. Damilare highlighted that publications, leadership experiences, certifications, and community engagement are crucial.

3. Know Your “Why”: A clear personal narrative is essential. Ask yourself: What global problem do I want to solve? How does my story connect to this problem? Your purpose should shine through in your personal statement and interviews.
4. Engage Actively in Research: Learning to conduct scoping reviews, contributing to research projects, and publishing your findings will make you visible in the global nursing community.
5. Leverage Digital Identity: LinkedIn, Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and ORCID profiles are now critical. Dr. Damilare emphasised that hiring committees and scholarship boards will research your online presence, so ensure it reflects your achievements.
He also emphasised the importance of mentorship in shaping a global nursing journey. According to him, no one builds a strong international career in isolation; having the right mentors helps you avoid unnecessary mistakes, gain clarity on your career direction, and access opportunities that may not be publicly visible. He encouraged nurses and students to intentionally seek out experienced professionals who can guide their growth, challenge their thinking, and support their progression through different stages of their academic and professional development.

Dr. Damilare’s final message was inspiring: “Your journey starts today. Take active steps towards becoming a better version of yourself. Opportunities will meet preparation.”
This is more than advice, it’s a call to action for every nurse and nursing student ready to go global.
